Brandon Wayne Dorsey, 32,and Jessi Karri Dorsey, 28, formerly of Independence, Iowa, were both sentenced in the Iowa District Court for Buchanan County on April 11, 2017. Both had previously entered guilty pleas to Arson in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, on December 13, 2016. The couple was charged following an investigation by the Independence Police Department, Independence Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined they had intentionally caused the fire at their residence, 302 8th Avenue NE Independence, on September 22, 2014.
Mr. Dorsey was sentenced to an imposed indeterminate term of confinement of not more than 10 years. The District Court directed the Department of Corrections to provide the Court with a progress report in 30 days. Following receipt of the report, the Court may reaffirm the imposition of the 10 year sentence or suspend the 10 year sentence and place Mr. Dorsey on probation supervision to the Department of Correctional Services.
Mrs. Dorsey was sentenced to a suspended indeterminate term of confinement of not more than 10 years and placed on probation supervision to the Department of Correctional Services for a period of two (2) to five (5) years on the corrections continuum. The corrections continuum permits the Department of Correctional Services to place Mrs. Dorsey into a residential work release facility if, in the discretion of the Department of Correctional Services, completion of such a program becomes necessary and appropriate.
Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey were also ordered to immediately begin repaying victim restitution in the amount of $42,065.55. Victims include several local churches, individuals and a bank that made monetary donations to a fundraising account established for the Dorsey family following the arson at their residence. They also received many donations of items, gift cards and assistance from the American Red Cross for which restitution cannot be ascertained.
