Shawn M. Harden
County Attorney 

Mr. Harden began his first term as Buchanan County Attorney in January 2011.  From 2003 through 2010, he practiced primarily in the areas of criminal defense, family and juvenile law with offices in Independence and Waterloo.  In 2005, he was appointed to a four-year term as a Judicial Magistrate for the First Judicial District of Iowa serving Buchanan County.  Mr. Harden is currently appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court Grievance Commission and is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and Buchanan County Bar Association.

Shawn M. Harden graduated summa cum laude from Mount Mercy University in 2000, receiving his undergraduate degree in criminal justice with minors in philosophy, sociology, and religious studies.  He received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence with Honors from Drake University Law School in 2003.

Mr. Harden spent two semesters at the Drake University Law School Legal Clinic as a student attorney, worked as a law clerk for Sporer & Illic, worked as a subrogation law clerk for EMC Insurance Companies and completed an internship with the State Public Defender’s Office.  

Jenalee A. Zaputil
Assistant County Attorney

Ms. Zaputil was appointed Assistant Buchanan County Attorney in July 2012.  Prior to this appointment she was a Legislative Clerk for the Iowa Senate and Legal Writer for Rust Consulting, Inc.  She is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Buchanan County Bar Association.

Ms. Zaputil graduated summa cum laude from Wartburg College in 2008, receiving her undergraduate degree in business administration with a management concentration and a minor in leadership.  She received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence with Honors from Drake University Law School in 2011.

Ms. Zaputil spent two semesters in the Drake University Law School Legal Clinic as a student attorney and completed a prosecuting attorney internship at the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office.

Daniel G. Clouse
Assistant County Attorney

Mr. Clouse was appointed Assistant Buchanan County Attorney in March 2016.  Prior to this appointment he practiced primarily in the areas of criminal defense, family and juvenile law.

Mr. Clouse graduated summa cum laude from Mount Mercy University in 2011, receiving his undergraduate degree in political science and criminal justice.  He received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence with High Honors from Drake University Law School in 2014.

Mr. Clouse spent two semesters in the Drake University Law School Legal Clinic as a student attorney in the Children’s Rights Clinic and completed an internship at the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

Kerry Larson
Legal Secretary

Ms. Larson  joined the Buchanan County Attorney’s Office in February 2013 and serves as the Legal Secretary.  Ms. Larson was previously the administrative secretary and records clerk for the Independence Police Department and worked at Wilbert Plastic Services as a human resource assistant, office assistant and payroll assistant.

Ms. Larson graduated with honors from DeVry University in 2008, receiving her undergraduate degree in health information technology.

As the Legal Secretary for the Buchanan County Attorney’s Office, Ms. Larson coordinates the schedules and activities of each attorney and the crime victim/witness coordinator, prepares legal documents and correspondence and provides information and direction to anyone contacting or visiting the office. 

Kelly Roseberry
Legal Assistant & Crime Victim/Witness Coordinator

Ms. Roseberry  joined the Buchanan County Attorney’s Office in March 2017 and serves as a Legal Assistant and Crime Victim/Witness Coordinator.  Ms. Roseberry was previously an activities coordinator at Cedar Valley Ranch and volleyball coach at Vinton-Shellsburg schools.

Ms. Roseberry graduated from Hawkeye Community College, receiving her undergraduate degree in liberal arts.

As the Crime Victim/Witness Coordinator, Ms. Roseberry provides services, support, and education to victims and witnesses of crimes.  She ensures victims and witnesses are treated with fairness and respect and receive information and assistance for relevant services, including notification of significant court events, referrals to appropriate support services, reasonable protection from the accused, help in determining and requesting restitution and the return of property and information concerning the conviction, sentencing, imprisonment and release of an offender. 

Deb Fleming
Collection Paralegal

Ms. Fleming is the Collections Manager in the Collection Office of the Benton County Attorney.  Purusant to a 28E Agreement between the Benton County Attorney and the Buchanan County Attorney, effective July 1, 2017, all unpaid court debt for Buchanan County is now collected with the assistance of and through the Collection Office of the Benton County Attorney. 

Ed Watts
Collection Paralegal

Mr. Watts works in the Collection Office of the Benton County Attorney.  Purusant to a 28E Agreement between the Benton County Attorney and the Buchanan County Attorney, effective July 1, 2017, all unpaid court debt for Buchanan County is now collected with the assistance of and through the Collection Office of the Benton County Attorney.
