Sale of Former Gravel Pit:
Buchanan County is accepting sealed bid proposals for the sale of a former gravel pit at the Buchanan County Auditor's office until 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 7, 2018 with the following legal description:
- Beginning at a point 1,150 ft. W and 50 ft. S of the NE corner of the SE qtr. NE qtr. of Sec. 1, T87N, R8W of the 5th P.M., Buchanan County, Iowa, thence W 311.7 ft., S545.2 ft. E311.7 ft., N545.2 ft. to the point of beginning. Containing 3.90 acres, more or less.
This property is a former gravel pit and is landlocked. This property is being sold “as is” without warranty or guarantee. Transfer of title will be by Warranty deed. Because Buchanan County is a political subdivision of the State of Iowa, this transaction is exempt from transfer tax and a declaration of value pursuant to Iowa Code § 428A.2(6), exempt from real estate disclosures pursuant to Iowa Code § 558A.1(4)(g), and exempt from a groundwater hazard statement pursuant to Iowa Code § 558.69(1).
Interested parties shall submit bids on bid proposal forms which can be obtained at the County Auditor’s office or from the below link. Bids must be submitted in a sealed envelope, and write on the outside of the envelope the word “land bid.” Bids must state the name(s) of the bidder(s), a current mailing address, daytime phone number and/or e-mail address. Bids will be accepted in the Buchanan County Auditor’s office at the Buchanan County Courthouse, 210 5th Avenue NE, PO Box 317, Independence, Iowa 50644 until 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018. Bids will be opened at 9:05 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018 in the Supervisors’ chambers at the Buchanan County Courthouse. Bidders who properly submitted a bid prior to the deadline will be permitted to raise their bids at this time. The Board reserves the right to reject any and all bids. The purchase price shall be due thirty (30) days after acceptance of the bid. Failure to receive the balance within thirty (30) days shall be grounds for voiding the sale. If a sale is voided the next highest bid from May 7, 2018, will be accepted and the balance of the purchase price shall be due thirty (30) days thereafter.

Pioneer Cemetery Commission Lawn Bids:
Buchanan County Pioneer Cemetery Commission is accepting sealed bid proposals for lawn care on a per-job basis at the Buchanan County Auditor's office until 9:00 a.m., Thursday, April 26, 2018 for the following locations:
Hickory Grove Cemetery – approx. 2 acres; 2553 Racine Ave., Winthrop, IA
Greenwood Cemetery – approx. ½ acre; 1579 330th St., Brandon, IA.
Shady Grove Cemetery – approx. ½ acre; 2845 Benson Shady Grove Ave., Jesup, IA
County Home Cemetery (Poor Farm) – approx. ½ acre; 2012 205th St., Independence, IA
Kint Cemetery – approx. 2/3 acre; 2036 105th St., Oelwein, IA
Prospective bidders are advised to inspect the cemeteries. Frequency of mowing and trimming will be a variable, according to factors of weather, soil, shade, etc. Certain maintenance standards shall apply with grass height not to exceed six (6) inches with the exception of a higher standard of maintenance to apply to Hickory Grove and Kint Cemeteries with the grass height not to exceed four (4) inches. Trimming can be done every second mowing but will be based on need.
Within two week(s) following the County’s acceptance of a bid, the successful bidder must provide to the County proof of adequate liability insurance coverage. For purposes of this paragraph, “adequate liability insurance coverage” shall mean coverage amount of not less than Three Hundred Thousand Dollars ($300,000) for personal injury proximately caused by negligence of the contractor, Six Hundred Thousand Dollars ($600,000) for any one accident proximately caused by negligence of the contractor, and Three Hundred Thousand Dollars ($300,000) for any damage to property proximately caused by negligence of the contractor. Said insurance policy shall name Buchanan County as an insured. Failure to provide such proof within the two-week period shall be grounds for setting aside the bid and reopening the bidding process.
All bids shall be submitted on bid proposal forms which can be obtained at the County Auditor’s office, 210 5th Ave. N.E., Independence from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday or from the below link.
Bids must be submitted in a sealed envelope mailed and received or given to the Buchanan County Auditor’s office not later than 9:00 a.m., Thursday, April 26, 2018. The words “cemetery lawn bid” must be written on the outside of the envelope. Bids will be opened beginning at 7:00 p.m., April 26, 2018 at the Pioneer Cemetery Committee meeting to be held at the Buchanan County Senior Center at 7:00 p.m. The Commission reserves the right to reject any or all bids.
